The Cheoneunsa-Seongsamjae Course is a hiking trail along the Jirisan Mountain Road opened in 1988. The trail passes through a number of Buddhist temples such as Cheoneunsa, Samiram, Dogyeam, Sudoam, and Sangseonam. It’s a 10km stretch, and it takes about three hours to hike the trail. Recently, however, most visitors drive through this course. It’s only about a 10 to 15 minute drive.

Walk about 4.5km from Cheoneunsa Temple and past Dogyeam and Sudoam, and you’ll reach the entrance to Sangseonam. Records tell us that this is where the Buddha statues made by ‘Naong Hwasang’ such as ‘Wonbul’ and ‘Bulgam’ used to be. They’re now at Cheoneunsa Temple. Continue walking up the mountain from the entrance to Sangseonam, and you’ll reach Siamjae Service Area. The place is named Siamjae because there used to a natural fountain there. Today, the area is occupied by a wide service area about 950m above sea level.
The service area commands a beautiful view of the mountain, so many people passing through this place on a car as well as hikers stop by here for the view. All the surrounding areas have at least 8th Degree of Green Naturality and 1st Degree of Nature Ecology, so there are still a wide variety of animal and plant species in the place.

Climb about 1.5km higher up, and you’ll reach the top of Seongsamjae Pass with a large parking lot and service area. The service area includes restaurants and souvenir shops, as well as stores selling hiking gear. So this is a must stop for those who didn’t bring hiking gear.
