Banyabong Peak (or Prajna Peak, 1,732m) is the second highest peak in Jirisan Mountain, and the highest peak in the western part of the mountain. The Banyabong Course passes through Nogodan Peak, Imgeollyeong, and Norumok, before reaching Banyabong Peak. The distance is 5.5km, and it takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete the trail. The course is for intermediate-level hikers.

If you walk about 1.5km from Nogodan Peak to Cheonwangbong Peak, you’ll see Dwaeji Pyeongjeon, or Boar Highland. It’s named as such because boars frequently come to this place for their favorite diet: roots of Solomon’s seal and Sanguisorba hakusanensis Makino. The path is gently sloped.

Go about 1.3km further from Dwaeji Pyeongjeon, and you’ll reach Piagol Samgeori. The path to the right will take you down to Piagol Valley. Walk about 400m further along the main ridge, and you’ll reach Imgeollyeong Pass. A story has it that this place is named after a chivalrous robber named Im Geol or Im Geol-nyeon, because it was the robber’s hideout. Water from the Imgeollyeong Spring tastes delicious all year round, and there is enough water for the hikers to drink and fill up their water bottle. The natural spring water makes it a perfect place to take a lunch or snack break.

Once your cross the 1,432m Imgeollyeong Peak, you’ll come across an intersection called Norumok Samgeori. It’s named as such because the terrain looks like a roe deer looking down Piagol. The word ‘noru’ means roe deer in Korean. The path to the right will take along the main ridge, and the one to the left will take you to Banyabong Peak. Take the left path, climb about 1km, and you’ll reach the top of Banyabong Peak. There is no restroom between Nogodan Peak and Banyabong Peak, so you need to use the one in front of the Nogodan Shelter. You can get drinking water from either the Nogodan Shelter or Imgeollyeong Spring.
