Donggang Village → Memorial Park for Sancheon and Hamyang Incidents → Banggok Village → Sangsa Falls → Ssangjae Pass → Godongjae Pass → Sucheol Village
This place has witnessed a sad part of modern Korean history. Most of us would agree that the saddest part of moden Korean history is the Korean War. And there were truly innocent victims who were killed not by the enemy, but by their own country.
February 7, 1951 was the day of a military operation code-named ‘Gyeonbyeok-Cheongya’, or simply Operation No. 207. Those involved in the operation were ordered to kill or capture communist soldiers, but ended up killing hundreds of innocent civilians. Decades later, they built a park and named it "Memorial Park for the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident'' in the Donggang-Sucheol Section to commemorate the deaths of innocent people. That’s why some people call the trail between Donggang and Sucheol the “Road of Healing and Love”.
This is the 12km-section of Jirisan Dulle-gil between Donggang-ri, Hyucheon-myeon, Hamyang-gun and Sucheol-ri, Geumseo-myeon, Sancheong-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do. This section may have a sad history, but also has natural beauties. It’s one of the most beautiful paths in the mountain, since you can see the Sangsa Falls and a number of pristine valleys such as Ssangjae, and Godongjae while walking on the path.
In this section of Dulle-gil, you’ll start from Donggang Village and pass through the Memorial Park for the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident and Banggok Village. And before reaching the destination in Sucheol Village, you’ll pass by the Sangsa Falls, Ssangjae, and Godongjae.
