This pavilion was built in 1895 in dedication to Jang Man-ri, who played a big role in helping King Seonjo when he fled to Uiju during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Donghojeong Pavilion is located in Hwarimdong Valley known for having many pavilions, but it’s the biggest and most elegant in design among the others.

In front of the pavilion is a large rock bed called Chairam more than one square kilometer in size. It is believed that the pavilion was primarily used as a place to drink and have fun, since there is a natural performance stage (Yeonggadae) in the middle of the river for the singers to sing as well as a another stage for instrument players (Geumjeogam).
