Korean classical music is an important part of the Korean history, cultural heritage recognized by the world, and a representation of the soul of the nation. And the Holy Land of Korean Traditional Music is located in Unbong, a small village on the skirt of Jirisan Mountain. The Holy Land of Korean Traditional Music was founded by classical music lovers, with the hope of telling the rest of the world that the City of Namwon is where the great tradition and culture have originated. In many aspects, Korean classical music can be called the spirit of Korea.

The City of Namwon has always been the center of Korean classical music. As a proof, the city is the background of two of the five pansori epics, i.e., Chunhyangga (Song of Chunhyang) and Heungbuga (Song of Heungbu). It’s also the birthplace of Song Heung-rok, the king of pansori who set standards for dongpyeongje-style pansori. While being the background of Chunhyangga and Heungbuga, Unbong, Namwon is the birthplace of dongpyeonje, one of the two singing styles of pansori. So it’s only natural that the Holy Land of Korean Traditional Music was founded here in Unbong, with the purpose of identifying the region as home to pansori while also establishing a basis for preserving, teaching, and developing pansori. Another realistic goal of the center is to lay the foundation for the commercialization and globalization of the traditional culture, which is now recognized by the UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

More precisely, dongpyeonje was first staged in Bijeon Village, Hwasu-ri, Unbong-eup, Namwon, Jeollabuk-do. Dongpyeonje is one of the two major singing styles of pansori along with seopyeonje. Bijeon Village is also the birthplace of Song Heung-rok, the creator of dongpyeonje and the ‘King of Pansori', a title given only to him. So in every essence, Namwon is the birthplace of pansori.
