Located in Banggwang-ri, Gwangui-myeon, Gurye-gun in Jeollanam-do, Sudoam Hermitage is affiliated with Cheoneunsa Temple in Gurye, and it is said to have been founded by the Supreme Master Deokun. It was rebuilt by monk Doseon. Sudoam is a historic hermitage widely recognized as the first residence of a Buddhist high priest in the country. During the Yeosun Uprising in 1948, rebels threatened to incinerate this hermitage so the monks donated the residential building as lumber for the construction of Banggwang Elementary School, leaving only the former site remaining. Later in 1980, Monk Pyeongjeonhwasang led the reconstruction of Sudoam and through his efforts the Daeungjeon Hall, Sansingak Pavilion, main building, and living quarters for monks were rebuilt.

During the late Joseon Dynasty, there were two stupas at the hermitage, and they were known as the Sanggukdang Stupa and the Hyanggokdang Stupa. The Sanggukdang Stupa is 1.6m in height (the body measuring 60cm) and 59cm in width. On the square pedestal, there is a foundation consisting of stone carved into an eight-petaled lotus flower blossoming upwards and six-petalled lotus flower blossoming downward. Ancestral tablets are carved on the front of the stone pagoda and inside, the name “Sanggukdang” is inscribed. On top of the pagoda, there are octagonal capstone, and the decorative top and marbles; the capstone and the top are one stone.

The Hyanggokdang Stupa is 1.65m in height (the body measuring 118cm). On the top of the pedestal shaped from a fieldstone sits the bell-shaped stupa and the main body and the top of the pagoda is made from a single piece of stone. Ancestral tablets are carved on the front of the stone pagoda, and inside, the name “Hyanggokdangtap” is inscribed. The upper part of the pagoda is decorated with a 13-petaled lotus flower blossoming downward and on the top, there is a decorative marble.
